Led Zeppelin, Rolling Stones, The Beatles…
“No hemos traído nada…”
Me quería quedar ahí.
[ENG] It’s been exactly one month and 20 days that we crossed an invisible, flexible, absorbent wall that was dividing the pastures from the Costa Rican jungle. And it swallowed us. We walked dodging roots, mud, insects, millions of sounds to which we had to let ourselves go. «Let’s run into whatever it’s necessary to get there”. The dens and sweet smell of fruit, the intense green everywhere, the limitation of the brain to process such a vision of life got me totally drugged. Maybe it was just the way the senses were saturated of so many stimuli. But walking through the jungle, I felt like if that morning all had been pure rock & roll. Drugged. It was in that state of mind when a hidden sensitivity woke up… the one that let us know that something was there even before we saw it. And a group of monkeys quickly crossed the path jumping from branch to branch.
We crossed the river. The rain mixed with our sweat. We reached a clearing and we found you in the middle of the primary forest. In a wooden house built like you, on balance, settling firmly in the land. «Are you coming here alone? You are brave. «
Alfredo decided to follow a dream thirty years ago and he left his life as a musician in San Jose. His dream was immortalized in his dining room in the city, with a picture where someone drew a shack in the woods. He went through the jungle and built his home somewhere an hour walking from the closest village. The house is more or less self-sustaining … and what he can’t get from the forest, he has to carry it walking through the jungle. To accompany her desired solitude, he built a temple to her gods … Led Zeppelin, Rolling Stones, The Beatles … Many of the autographed posters that covered the room, could be sold for a sum of money that would allow him to live for years. But they were needed there … along with the 12-volt transistor from which he showed to the forest that this was his rhythm. That he would stay there.
«Stay here for a night and let’s share,» he said. «We did not bring anything with us…» «And what do you need?» I realized that we needed nothing … and we stayed.
We shared hours of conversation, a waterfall, energy, balance and harmony advises, rock from the 70’s, violet rays, a meal made on a wood kitchen, an extensive tour of your garden, «it happens to you with the photos the same thing than to me with the music”. «Until the full moon woke up and silver stained the leaves, the house, the sky, your faces … I felt half asleep in the swing of a hammock while Pachamama rocked me singing a lullaby composed by the rumor that doesn’t stop when the night falls in the jungle. And all those hours of words and silence started to be recorded in my mind.
Alfredo wanted to come with us on our way back. He spoke with spiders, knew the properties of every plant. «I hope you come back soon … and would explain you more of what the forest taught me.» We crossed the threshold of the forest, this time in reverse, and he called Antonio to come get us with her quad. The sky began to crack to burst in a tropical rain. You hugged us.
Rattling in the quad back to the hostel, «let’s see if we can now cross the river.» The rain roared drenching our clothes. I started to tremble; the rain beat our skins so hard that I couldn’t even open my eyes. I remembered your embrace to say goodbye, your «Happy Birthday». And it all made sense, as if the rain was cleaning without shame all living things, making even the deepest fears disappear. I wanted to stay there. I wanted to stay in the forest, in the green, in the life, in a million species growing and dying. I wanted to stay. I wasn’t feeling that I was leaving, I felt like if something was forcing me to get out of there. And from the place where the rain was killing the most embedded of my fears, seventy torn tears, a gasp and twenty sobs were born. I wanted to stay there.
When we came back to the city more than a week later, I found again his birthday present: a seed that would protect us both, two coconut earrings kept from the time when he made handicrafts and the feeling that I had a new space in my mind where I could always go back. Wrapped in green, with jaguars and monkeys, in peace, balance … lying in the hammock.
